Another New Drug for Covid 19

Post by Badri »

An antibody is an immunoglobulin normally produced by the immune system of the body to fight against a bacteria or virus that invade the body. There is now a lab made version of monoclonal antibody called Sotrovimab that would target the covid virus. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. The UK Govt. has approved its use. Scientists suggest that it should work well even against new variants such as Omicron.

The drug is given through intravenous drip. In a clinical trial, a single dose reduced the risk of hospitalisation and death by 79% in high risk adults. It is the second drug after Ronapreve that was approved for treating Covid infection in UK. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recommends that both are used within five days of someone getting symptoms.
